We are about to start our hike on San Pedro volcano on the shores of Lake Atitlán, Guatemala. At the trailhead a sign encourages all hikers to read this prayer:
O heart of the sky
Heart of mother earth
Heart of the lake
Heart of the fire
Alongside the 4 winds we breathe
Which are the heart of our lifeO volcano of the heights
Sacred temple of the eternal Tzutujil Mayas
Allow us to enter,
Beneath your feet protect us,
Guide us and watch over us during this walk
So at the end of the path we are serene and at peace.
After climbing 9,906ft we reach the sky and watch the lake change colors as the clouds move beneath and around us.
Thank you, O volcano of the heights.
